How do I organize my accounts into separate buckets by tax treatment?

The cleanest way to organize accounts by tax treatment is using Asset Groups: separate buckets for taxable, tax-advantaged, and tax-free accounts, each with their own risk preference.

Step 1 - Tag each account with the correct tax treatment.

  1. Open Net Worth and click the pencil (Edit) icon on each account.
  2. Set Tax Treatment to Taxable, Tax-Advantaged, or Tax-Free.
  3. Click Save.

Step 2 - Create Asset Groups by tax treatment.

  1. Open Asset Groups and click Set up Asset Groups - name it (e.g. "Taxable", "Roth", "Tax-deferred").
  2. Drag and drop accounts into each group.
  3. Set a different risk preference for each group if it fits your strategy. For example, more aggressive in a Roth (long horizon) and more conservative in a Traditional IRA (closer to retirement withdrawals).

To switch between group views, use the Portfolio Selector in the left sidebar (or at the top of the page on mobile). PortfolioPilot generates separate recommendations for each group based on its risk preference and the tax treatment of the accounts inside it.
