How do I add a self-directed IRA (SDIRA) with alternative assets like real estate or crypto?

There are three ways to add an SDIRA in PortfolioPilot, depending on what your custodian supports.

  • Try connecting the SDIRA first. Some SDIRA custodians are supported by our connection partners. Open Net Worth - Add an asset - Securities and search for your SDIRA custodian in the institution search box. If it's there, follow the connection flow.
  • If the custodian isn't supported, create the SDIRA manually. Open Net Worth - Add an asset - Securities - "Enter or copy/paste securities". Nickname the account (e.g. "Self-Directed IRA") and set Tax Treatment to Tax-Advantaged (Traditional SDIRA) or Tax-Free (Roth SDIRA).

Add each alternative asset:

  • Crypto. Add it the same way as any other investable security, inside your SDIRA's Securities account, via "Enter or copy/paste securities" using the crypto ticker (e.g. BTC-USD, ETH-USD).
  • Real estate. An SDIRA usually holds real estate as an investment (a syndication, fund, or LLC interest) rather than direct title to a property. Add it as Private equity with the appropriate equity type (Real Asset, Venture / PE fund, or Operating Business), not as a direct Real estate entry.
  • Other private equity / funds. Add as Private equity with the equity type that matches the holding.

SDIRA alternative assets are usually illiquid, so update values manually as new statements arrive. If your SDIRA structure is complex, email support@portfoliopilot.com and we'll investigate and help you sort it out asap.
