How do I handle foreign exchange and currency conversion in my PortfolioPilot portfolio?
For stocks and securities held in a connected brokerage account, PortfolioPilot automatically converts values to USD using current exchange rates - no manual steps needed. If a connected account is showing incorrect currency values, that is likely a sync issue and you can report it to support@portfoliopilot.com.For manually entered assets (e.g. a property or private investment held in a foreign currency), you will need to convert the value to USD yourself before entering it:
- Convert the current value to USD (or CAD) at the current exchange rate
- Enter the converted value when adding the asset as a custom security
- Update the value periodically as exchange rates change or the asset value changes
- For clarity, add a note in the asset name (e.g. "German Property - EUR converted to USD as of [date]")
Known limitation: For manually entered assets, PortfolioPilot treats the entered USD value as stable and does not model currency fluctuation risk. Update the value periodically to keep your net worth accurate as exchange rates change.
