How do I view or add cost basis to my securities in PortfolioPilot?

PortfolioPilot supports cost basis tracking so you can accurately assess tax implications, unrealized gains/losses, and tax-loss harvesting opportunities. Here's how to view and add it:

Viewing cost basis:

  1. Go to the Transactions tab
  2. Select the account from the dropdown
  3. Your tax lots and cost basis will be displayed per security

Adding or updating cost basis:

If your cost basis is missing or incomplete (common with older positions or recently connected accounts), you can backfill it in two ways:

Option 1 - Manual entry:

  • In the Transactions tab, select the account and manually add historical buy transactions with the original purchase price and date

Option 2 - Statement upload:

  • Click 'Upload Statement' and submit an old brokerage statement (CSV, PDF, or Excel)
  • Our AI will extract the tax lot data and update your cost basis (usually takes ~2 min)

Tip: You do NOT need to create a separate manual account to fix missing cost basis - you can backfill it directly on your synced account using the methods above. An accurate cost basis is essential for the Tax Optimization and Tax-Loss Harvesting features to work correctly.
