What format does my Excel or CSV file need to be in for upload?

PortfolioPilot's AI can parse the most common formats automatically. Only two things are truly required:

  • Ticker symbol (e.g. AAPL, VTI, BTC) - required
  • Quantity (number of shares or units) OR current value in USD - required (one or the other)

Everything else is optional but improves accuracy:

  • Account name or account type
  • Purchase price / cost basis
  • Purchase date

Format tips:

  • Both .xlsx and .csv formats are supported
  • No blank rows or merged cells - each security should be on its own row
  • Column headers help, but are not required - the AI will attempt to identify columns automatically
  • If you have multiple accounts, add an "Account" column to keep them organized

If your file doesn't parse correctly, try the copy/paste method instead: open your brokerage website, select your holdings table, copy it, and paste it directly into the "Enter or copy/paste securities" input box.
